Mandarin Grill Restaurant KL
Every time I park my car at Mandarin Oriental Hotel, I always use the lift opposite to Mandarin Grill Restaurant, and that signature wall calls me many times. But I choose to visit Nobu & KLCC instead..haha. I have been thinking of coming many years now, but Maria Steak Cafe & The Restaurant, at The Club Saujana Resort offers great steak and I am afraid Mandarin Grill will disappoint me.
Finally the day has come, my friend who has a huge passion in culinary world and good food, decided to give this restaurant a try. Blog a review about this is good for my readers who want to know what is happening inside one of the most talked restaurant in town!
Dear Meat Lovers, you may now plan a fine dining date with your special one to Mandarin Grill Restaurant KL. I’ve been and approve the ambiance and great dishes for you. Here’s why: From the outside, you are greeted with the convincing fire wall and you know the team means business. Well greeted by the hostess and a Mat Saleh guy (don’t know who is him, GM or Manager), ushered us to the main dining area.
Voila, happy and as expected not many people tonight and that is a GOOD NEWS for customer like me. Simply because, I prefer to go to a fine dining restaurant with less people so the staff would be much more attentive and food serve well from the kitchen team. That’s what I normally have in mind. They let us choose our seat, so we sat near the window comfortably.
While waiting for the menu, I took some photos of the dining area for you, so you know what to expect inside and act like expert if you plan to woo your crush or GF 😀
Menu was a bit heavy, simple and straight forward. I like the idea of not having too many choices of food, so they can concentrate and master what they offer, rather than offering large size menu but Kitchen team can’t keep up on the quality and presentation. This Chef Benjamin Halat (German) quite a brilliant one.
Tonight’s AMUSE-BOUCHE (a complimentary appetizer offered at some restaurants), we have 3 types.
First, Cold Tuna Ponzu with Puff Rice and wasabi Mayo sauce hold nicely with bone marrow, tasted lovely.
Second, Scallop cracker. Smell like fish, I am not sure if scallop has its own smell, taste yes but smell..mm, not sure.
The 3rd one – Hot Cod Fish praline with chili mayo sauce. If they didn’t tell it was a cod, i would say it is potato, cos it is really taste like grilled mash potato, but after few bites you know that’s a fish, maybe you think its tuna or salmon, but guys its a cod fish 😀
My friend said, they can do better, didn’t impress him much. I say, I love the cod fish and scallop cracker. Ponzu was okay, but prefer to eat without puff rice. It taste like expired, in Malaysia we say (masuk angin), I am sure the Chef De Cuisine Benjamin Halat has his own reason on why the puff rice taste that way.
I chose Foie Gras Terrine RM115, White Portwine Jelly, Brioche & Raspberry Espuma as my main appetizers. I love the combination of the color and taste, sweet, salty and sour. The best Foie Gras Terrine, you can also get from Samplings on The Fourteenth Restaurant, Berjaya Hotel Resort Kuala Lumpur.
My friend love his wild mushroom cream soup RM48, parsley crepe with roasted garlic foam. Incredible, he said.
Oo..this one. The waiter came and show us this box, we thought they’re selling cigar but hey check this out, you can choose your own steak knife, classic and elegant offering of steak knives. I chose the cream, look like the handle made of ivory. Laguiole Steak Knives, you like the knife? Kudos team, what a way to show your guests, how important good service in F&B line.
Here’s my Australian Black Angus 250g, RM198 (150 Days Grain Fed) Medium cooked steak with MOREL SAUCE . I was in awe with the presentation, creative. High quality meat and cook with heart. I am very easy to please with steak. Not many dining places offer morel as the choice of sauce, I was surprise when they have this. Best part was, the sauce came with chopped morel not just a plain sauce. It reminds me so much of my dear friend Priscilla. She cooked me a marvelous and out of this world morel mushroom dish during my visit last year to France. I miss her now.
Oh that whole roasted garlic, eat it with slight dip of carrot sauce, duhh-mazing. I love my steak! Totally!
They have quite number of side dish to choose from, the signature fries, baked potato with sour cream, crispy onion rings, green asparagus ragout, sauteed mushroom etc at RM33 each. I chose Truffled cream Spinach RM33. Anything with Truffle, morel, foie gras or caviar will be my choice.
My friend chose Herb Crusted Lamb Rack with cous cous rice, eggplant caviar and artichokes RM208. He said “I hate this restaurant, they gonna make me fat.! I have to come back again because I have not had a good lamb rack for so many years and finally I found a restaurant who can cook wonderful lamb rack! He was really happy and thanked me many times for suggesting this place 😀
The grand finale would be Duet of Valrhona chocolate RM38, Chocolate Glaze with Forest berries to end my night.
Warm Granny Smith Apple Tart with Vanilla Ice Cream and Raisin Butterscoth RM38 for my friend. We both finish our desserts.
Waiter came again and surprise us with another box after the knives box earlier. What’s inside truly fancy. Another chocolate and it’s complimentary from the restaurant. Wah..if i know they have this, I wouldn’t want to order my dessert earlier. At the end I only had 1 of this beautiful chocolate sigh, but no sigh..my dessert was superb so no regrets.
No wine just good food with fresh juices. I truly enjoyed my stay and experience and definitely will come back again with my loved one. Waiters are train well, they can explain/suggest what food is best to choose with clear explanation and respect. Total spent for 2 person with the food ordered above was RM700++. Friends, for special occasion do come and check out this cool restaurant yourself.
Miss Tawau Rating’s:
Room of improvement: Maybe in the future, waiter should let the guests finish with the menu, then only serve the bread or whatever you want to put on the table. The menu was heavy and quite big, it almost occupy the whole small table for 2, it was a bit hard turning to the next page of the menu cos the bread on my left side occupied the small space which i needed to spread the menu
